interview

1. What inspired you to become an author?

Writing comes from my soul. I wouldn’t be myself if I wasn’t a writer. I really believe it’s my calling and fate. I write the genres I write in because I enjoy them and the interest comes from the heart. I write BWWM books because I strongly support interracial relationships. This is a personal lifestyle choice so of course I wanna write something that I’m interested in and that reflects me. That’s why my books come from the heart concerning that aspect. I wanted to write stories that showcase couples in BWWM relationships for readers interested in them.

2.  What was your first reaction when your debut novel was published?

My debut novel was published by Simon and Schuster so I was elated. I couldn’t believe it had finally happened because I’d worked so hard for years trying to get someone to notice my work. Unfortunately, my mother passed away around the time the book was released so emotionally I wasn’t there. I was still proud but because of the difficult loss, I became detached from what I’d accomplished and though it was my first novel published, it will always link to a very difficult part of my life.

3. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? I don’t like to answer these types of questions. LOL! I’ve been in the writing business 20 years now, and I’ve learned that you can’t plan on anything careerwise or in life. We can hope things turn out as planned but life always throw curveballs so I just go with the flow and execute my goals to the best of my ability from day-to-day.

4. What advice can you give to anyone who wants to become an author?

The best advice I would say is to make sure you are writing from the heart and if you aren’t then you won’t last in this business because it’s tough. Also, everyone should research the craft and business side of writing. Be prepared to continue learning and growing because that’s the key to being a good writer.

excerpt1

Excerpt from Hawaii Christmas Baby:

“Everyone in that room saw how you two looked at each other.” V pointed toward the house. “You can’t fight your attraction to Jody and he won’t be able to fight his for you.”

“We have to if we intend to stay sane. Jody knows we can’t be together now.” Talia twisted and turned. “That’s it. It’s over. No negotiation.”

“What’s the big deal about dating your stepbrother?” V put his hand on his hip. “Shoot, I got blood cousins who are fucking so—”

“Is everything a joke to you?”

“You’re a grown woman, Talia. It’s your decision who you date.”

“And I’m deciding to break it off,” she shouted. “I’m not down with this. Besides, I don’t wanna hear from Momma that this is just another way I’ve screwed up. She’d love to tear into me if she found out I slept with Jody.”

“What if Jody tells them what happened? Isn’t it better to be honest?”

“Trust me, he won’t tell.” Talia massaged her fro. “He looked about as sick as I am.”

Jody walked out. “Talia, we need to talk.”

“Let me leave you two alone.” V started toward the house then stopped beside Jody. “Mm.”

Jody pulled on his blazer, fidgeting. “Is there a problem?”

“Nope.” V walked past, checking out Jody’s ass.

“Jody, this is horrible.” Talia flung her arms. “How can this be happening?”

“Calm down.” He held her. “It’s all right.”

“It’s not all right. We slept together.”

“I remember.” He grinned. “I was there.”

“This isn’t funny.” She pushed him. “This is horrible. It’s horrible, Jody!”

“Come here.” He hugged her. “It’s not horrible. It’s a peculiar situation, and I’m as shocked as you are, but it is what it is.”

            “And what is it?”

“Talia, I care about you and last night was the best night of my life.”

She touched the collar of his shirt. “Mine too but—”

“I don’t want it to end.”

“We can’t see each other, Jody. It’s just not right.”

He kissed her cheek. “I’m not ready to let go of how good you make me feel. I know it’s only been one night, but my heart won’t let me walk away.”

“We can’t do this.” She turned away from him for fear of losing herself in his eyes. “No way would this work.”
