30 Days 30 Authors- Anita Davis

Hi everyone!! Welcome to a new week! The 30 Days event continues with Anita Davis! Check out her interview as well as read an excerpt from her book, Catch Me If You Can: Friends Forever 1.

Anita Davis is a former elementary teacher born and raised in Chicago. Although she wrote short stories much of her childhood, she didn’t unlock and cultivate her passion as a writer until she became a writing teacher for middle school students. The more she had to create sample writings for her students, the more she realized her passion and ability to tell stories in the written form. She decided to hone her craft as a writer by completing her Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing via National University. She now pursues writing books most of her time, in addition to being a flight attendant and a substitute teacher. She is Co-Founder of Book Euphoria, a group of Chicago authors bound by their love of literature. Book Euphoria hosts Book It Chicago bi-annually, a literary event series and they also founded the empowerment movement, Black Girl Passion. Anita seeks to encourage, engage, and entertain her readers.

1. Besides writing, what else do you like to do?

Besides writing, I LOVE to read. As of late, I prefer to read romance novels over any other genre. I also love to skate, exercise, sing, design things, whether it be T-shirts, jewelry, paintings, redesigning a space in my house, and I also love to make functional furniture pieces.

2. What inspired you to become an author?

My inspiration for becoming an author is that I’ve always been an avid reader and writer. I eventually became a middle school writing teacher and constantly having the discipline of writing in my face reminded me of how much I loved to write. I had to get my students interested in writing, but the district samples provided never motivated them. I had to walk them through the stages of writing (plotting, drafting, editing, etc.) with off-the-top-of-my-head samples. Doing that daily for seven years grounded me in the reality that I wanted to write on a more serious basis and prompted me to get my Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, which further reassured me that writing was my calling and true passion. It all led me to publishing my first work, a novella, “Underneath It All: Sisterhood Chronicles 1”, in about 2014.  I haven’t stopped since then. I won’t stop.

3. What was your first reaction when your debut novel was published?

My first published work was a novella, “Underneath It All: Sisterhood Chronicles 1”. I was so excited to have a book on the market, something I’d written. My first review said, “…Blah blah blah happily ever after. Good life time short show. The author has skills she just needs to get off the fantasy and write drama and suspense.” I smiled so hard because the reader acknowledged my writing skills. That made me giddy, proud, and ready to keep going.

4. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

In the next five years, I see myself being invited to book festivals as one of the headlining authors, having a grand readership, more titles under my belt, the book events I host in Chicago heavily visited and loved by readers and authors, and still loving and enjoying this book life.

5. Do you have any new projects that you are currently working on?

In regards to my works in progress, I am working on my first contemporary romance series, the finale to my Sisterhood Chronicles Series, “All Things Considered: Sisterhood Chronicles 5”, and my November release, “Hues”

6. What advice can you give to anyone who wants to become an author?

The advice I would give to anyone wanting to become an author is to never stop learning the craft of writing, never be afraid to tell a story, be as much of a reader as a writer, find trusted and compatible writing partners, understand that it is a journey and not to compare themselves to another author’s journey, and above all, have fun doing it.

Excerpt from Catch Me If You Can: Forever Friends 1

…“Girl slow down.” Melanie drew in deep breaths trying to slow her heart rate down. “I want to know why you just lied to that fine man saying that you’re taken. By who, and why haven’t I met him?”

“Whatever.” Karen kept looking ahead.

“Why didn’t you take Kyle up on his offer for a date? You couldn’t stop gawking at him, barely said two words to him, so I know you like him.”

Karen picked up her pace.

“Stop.” Melanie pulled on Karen’s arm with enough force to stop their run. “What’s up? You talk about wanting a great man to pursue you, but whenever they try, you shoot them down. You just had an NBA player gawk at you and ask you out, and you turn him down. Why?”

“That’s exactly why I turned him down. He’s an NBA player. That means a horrible reputation with women precedes him.” Karen took off running again.
