COA I

When close friends Candice, Samar, Sha, and Sabrina have to face the reality that tomorrow isn’t promised for any of them, primarily due to Candice’s mother’s violent death and the rapidly surfacing complexities in their lives, they realize they are capable of anything, be it positive or negative, and it is up to them to make the best choices to avoid being in harm’s way.

Candice, Samar, Sha, and Sabrina are learning how to deal with the highs and lows their lives are hurling at them. Candice is sixteen and is having a preponderant amount of difficulty dealing with her mother’s death and coping with issues regarding her peers. She experiences her first serious romantic relationship. She wonders if their love for one another will stand the test of time and if their relationship is worth the trouble it brings her way.

Samar, seventeen and the boldest of them all, definitely marches to the beat of her own drum. She is very temperamental, especially because her boyfriend seemingly cannot be faithful to her. She seeks revenge and does not care how evil she has to become to achieve it.

Sha is Samar’s younger sister. At sixteen, Sha is in the process of determining if she wants to discontinue an abusive relationship in order to become involved in a much healthier one. She learns from her mistakes but is unsure if she will repeat them, despite her lessons learned.

Sabrina is seventeen, laid back, and carefree. She mostly keeps to herself and does not need a lot of attention to feel self-assured. She figures having too many girlfriends will cause too many problems she’d rather not deal with. She has strong feelings for a fellow whom she does not trust. She is on the fence about whether to follow her heart, go out on a limb, and give him a chance.

Cover-2-Tameka

When close friends Candice, Sha, Natalie, and Brandy have to face the reality that tomorrow isn’t promised for any of them, primarily due to Candice’s mother’s violent death and another tragedy involving someone very close to them, they realize they are capable of anything, be it positive or negative, and it is up to them to make the best choices to avoid being in harm’s way.

Candice is sixteen and is having a preponderant amount of difficulty dealing with her mother’s untimely death and the changes occurring in her family. Her relationship with Kelvin becomes very testy. She can’t seem to figure out whom she wants to be with. Who will it be, Jacob or Kelvin?

Sha is sixteen and could possibly end up pushing her boyfriend, Delvin, away when she needs him the most. Will she hold on to him or will she lose him forever?

The college years are upon close friends Candice, Brandy, Natalie, and Sabrina. They realize they are capable of falling, be it falling in love or falling into a web of sticky negativity. They are continuously learning how to deal with the highs and lows their lives are hurling at them.

Candice is eighteen and her relationship with her boyfriend, Kelvin, is very testy. Jealousy and rage ensues especially when her other love interest, Jacob, is around. She can’t seem to figure out whom she wants to be with and Jacob isn’t making it easy for her to disregard her feelings for him. Who will it be, Jacob or Kelvin?

Eighteen year old Brandy has to decide if she wants to be with and remain with her love interest, Mitch, when she starts college or if she wants to continue remain single? She finally notices the enchantingly charming Brice when she starts attending the same college as him, but does he stand a chance of stealing the heart that Mitch has so diligently conquered?

Natalie is nineteen and is having difficulty maintaining her Christian beliefs and values due to being curious about going all the way with her boyfriend, Ezekiel. She knows she’s supposed to wait until marriage, but that’s easier said than done. Will she hold up her virtue or allow temptation to get the best of her?

Last, but never least, there’s Sabrina who is nineteen and is thoroughly enjoying being with the love of her life in many more intimate ways than one. Will she have any regrets regarding how close she’s allowed Steven to get to her? Can she truly trust that he won’t break her heart, especially after going to the point of no return with him?

EXCERPT

From Part 1

Sabrina

His intentions cannot possibly be any good. I must be the female he has chosen to prey on next. I don’t know what to say to him. He makes me nervous, and no other guy has done that before. I know one thing—he is absolutely not having his way with me. I refuse to be his next victim.

Part 2

Candice

I want to tell him that my mom and he have taught me better and that I know better. I know I’m contributing to making my race lo ok bad and I’m fitting into the mold of certain stereotypes that have been thrown out there about black people. Especially the particular stereotype that we are violent. I don’t say anything, though. My lips will not part. Tears begin to fall down my cheeks instead. I feel my dad’s eyes on me. He wipes my tears away, but more tears replace the ones he wiped away. I’m so tired, both mentally and physically.

Part 3

Natalie

After we finish our homework, he walks me to my white BMW M6, which is parked in his driveway. I open my car door and stand in the doorway. He stands directly in front of me. I toss my backpack into the passenger seat. We can’t keep our eyes off each other. I’m infatuated with him.

“I’m going to come and pick you and Christian up in the morning,” he informs me.

He brings a smile to my face. “Do you want me to call you when I get home?” I ask him.

“You already know the answer to that.”

“I’ll call you when I get there. Oh, another thing. Will you accompany me to Bible study tomorrow evening?”

He’s taken aback by my request. I can tell. But after pondering this for a moment, he says simply, “Yes. No problem, Natalie.”

“I’ll pick you up at six forty-five tomorrow evening, then.”

“Okay.”

“Another thing.”

“What is it?”

“Will you come with me to Bible study from here on out, every Wednesday?”

“Are you serious?”

“Yes.” My heart sinks because I assume he’s going to say no.

“Do you go to Bible study every week?”

“I do,” I confirm. “So does Christian.”

“Figures,” he states, as if he doesn’t even know why he asked the obvious.

“What do you mean by that?”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“I know you’re probably wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into concerning me and everything that goes along with me.”

He nods in agreement. “I understand.”

“My faith in God is a part of the package deal you’re getting along with me. If you don’t want to continue to see me, I’ll understand. And another thing—I’m not allowed in your bedroom, so I can’t go in there anymore.”

“Says who?”

“My dad.”

“That’s not an issue, Natalie.”

“And you’re not allowed in my bedroom. We also can’t be at one another’s houses if our parents aren’t home.”

“If you say so.” He isn’t taking heed to what I’m telling him.

“I’m serious!”

He grabs me by my waist, pulling me closer to him while taking in everything I’ve told him. He kisses me and as I’m returning his kiss, I think this must be a “goodbye, nice knowing you” kiss.

From Fallen

Natalie

“Come here,” he requests, pulling me closer to him.

I lean over, kissing him on his soft lips. He kisses me back and his kisses always take me to a mystical place. I want to do more. At least, my body does. My mind hasn’t caught up with my body yet. He pulls me in closer to him and our kisses become more intense. He moves down to my neck, I moan softly and then realize…

“Ezekiel, we’re on the side of the road.”

He stops kissing me, looks over his shoulder, leans back over, says, “Come here,” and kisses me one more time before taking us for a ride around town while holding my hand.
