interview

1. Besides writing, what else do you like to do?

I love organizing events and conducting leadership trainings. I like learning new things so I am always researching and seeking ongoing training to sharpen my skills.

2. What inspired you to become an author?

I was given a book of ‘inspiring women’, instead of reading the book I became intrigued with how much of an impact women can make. It was then that I began writing and within a few hours of writing I knew that I wanted to be a published author.

3. What was your first reaction when your debut novel was published?

I was filled with mixed emotions. I immediately smiled and remembered thinking how awesome it was to see my manuscript actually be turned into a book.

4. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Within the next five years I see myself helping aspiring writers reach their goals. I want to be able to provide resources to others who one day wish to become an author and entrepreneur.

5. What advice can you give to anyone who wants to become an author?

I definitely would advise future authors to carefully do their research. Writing is a business and like any business you have to be familiar with every aspect and have self knowledge of the business.

Excerpt from One Night Only

I literally can’t stand sitting in the house every weekend alone. Nothing excites me. I just need one night of pleasure and fun; a night to let loose and take my hair down. I know what I will do. I will call up an old friend and see what’s popping in the big city.

“Hey Leah, it is me, Sasha. What’s going on tonight?”

“Sasha? Yeah right. I haven’t heard from Sasha in about four years; now, seriously, who is this and why are you playing on my phone?”

Sasha, while laughing out loud, says, “Girl, you are so crazy but, seriously, it’s me, Sasha. What’s going on in the city tonight?”

Leah thinks for a minute. “The Missionary Church is having a night revival and, if I’m not mistaken, the church in our old neighborhood started hosting weekend activities, but you know I don’t fool with church folks, girl.”

Sasha laughs uncontrollably. “Leah, are you serious right now? I don’t want to hear about church. I have spent the last four years of my life in church, from Sunday morning worship to Saturday night kids quest praise. Oh and let’s not forget about Tuesday night bible study; trust me, girl, the last thing I want to hear about is church. I need some real fun in my life. You know, the kind of fun that we used to have back in the day. Don’t act like you forgot about all the fun we used to have and stunts we used to pull way back when. Girl, just thinking about all the times we went out and partied until the early mornings and how crunk we used to get over on the strip by the barbeque stand; yes indeed girl; I need some fun back in my life.”

“WHAT!” yells Leah. “Girl, again, who are you? And what have you done with single, saved, sanctified Sasha? You know what? Never mind, it doesn’t matter who you are; I like you way better than Sasha. Get dressed and be at my house in one hour. Let’s turn up and party like it is 1999 again!” The two ladies hang up the phone.

Oh my God, I have absolutely nothing to wear tonight. I haven’t been out in years. What was I thinking? This isn’t me, what are the folks at church going to say? What if someone sees me? What if I have forgotten how to dance? Lord, I need a sign, do I stay? Do I go? Please Lord, I need to hear from you right now. Hello? Oh well, guess he is busy; dang, even the Lord has plans tonight. Guess that’s my sign to go out and have fun!

I cannot believe I spent four years of my life tied down to doing everything right, only to feel like I’ve missed out on my life. I just want to have fun, be free, and live my life. Wait, what am I saying? I am free; I do have fun. Just yesterday, I drove to the national charity center and fed the homeless. Wow, did I really just say that? I have truly lost my zest for life. I mean, here I am almost thirty years of age, no kids no prospects, and I sit at home every night and read and clean my house; who does that?

All I need is one night only.

Sasha pulls up to Leah’s house and enters. “Leah girl, I am here and I am ready to get my party on, but I must say that I am just a little bit nervous, I mean, it has been years since I stepped out and I keep going back and forth in my head and, I must admit, I’m starting to have doubts.”

Leah shrugs. “Sasha, really? Like, what are you, a child? You are so lucky I love you, girl. I called over my homeboy after I spoke with you and he dropped off something to help get us off to a good night. All I need you to do is sit back and relax while I prepare it.”

Sasha is looking confused. “Prepare what? And what homeboy do you know that just comes and drops you off things, like seriously girl?”

“SASHA!” screams Leah. “Sit your nervous self down on the sofa and relax! Now, you called me, remember? It’s been years since we spoke, I was fine at my own home, minding my own business, and you called me wanting to have fun, so sit back, relax, and let’s have fun! I can’t believe you seriously allowed the fact that you started going to church change you! You promised me years ago that, no matter what happened in your life, you would always be true and always be down for anything; did you forget that? Like seriously chick, you need to get it together; you are acting like an old maid and, quite frankly, you are killing my vibe, so sit down and chill the hell out before I get mad!!!”

Sasha sits back and relaxes while Leah finishes getting ready, they then leave Leah’s house to enjoy a night out in the city.
